Fancy Felines; Saintly City Cat Show

*listen to this while you read cat stuff*

I like cats, I really do. I have a cat and she is my lazy little black shadow. Trailing behind me as I peruse my apartment, conversing and pawing at dust bunnies. I love her dearly.

Do I have a membership to Cat Fancy? Nope. Do I feel compelled to drape myself in as much feline related clothing as possible? Norp. Do I ask prospective intimate companions to dress as kitties? Good heavens, that would be hilarious… but sadly, no.

So… how did I end up at a cat show, nexus of feline fortitude and worship? Eh, it sounded like fun. Something to check off the internal list of human experiences, along side eating an entire bag of potato chips, and…pfft… I don’t know… hitting your head on an open cabinet door in the kitchen.

The 40th Annual Saintly City Cat Championship Cat Show will feature hundreds cats from the United States and Canada competing. The highest scoring male and female will be crowned Winter Carnival Household Pet King and Queen.

The mostly snoozing cat population was only slightly inconvenienced by my photo requests.

These beautiful cats and the people that tirelessly dote on them were so kind and accepting. Happy to share their experiences and eager to compare cat tales. Easily falling into discussions of rules and regulations; what makes a champion, the ribbon system, and very complex point accumulations. It was most charming to just talk to people who had a real passion, and were happy to have a community to revel in…

The cats… couldn’t have cared less. Seriously.

I have edited the final picture to convey the true sentiment of these majestic beings…

Feel the love.

Card Artistry; Locket

This is Paper Napkin, he is a cat. He is fat. He is a ‘drooler.’ I love him, and my friends love him… so much that he has become an icon. He appears on news feeds, celebrates his birthday on April Fool’s Day, and is the subject of the yearly birthday card for my friend LR.

Last years contribution…

The year before that…

This year the theme was a kind of locket that held portraits two important pets; Napkin, and Riley. Riley is a giant otter chocolate lab and senior citizen, with an unsinkable heart of gold.IMG_20150717_204801

Per my usual I was going to take this sketch and recreate it with card stock.. but I decided that I rather liked my sketch and opted to ink and color the fuzzy, fat bastard.DSC03483

Upon finishing the portrait, I think that was a rather good idea. He looks so damn dapper, and handsome. You’d never think that this fellow would attempt to eat you out of house and home at every opportunity.

Next was Riley, she needed to be more feminine and pretty… and who doesn’t want to draw eyelashes on a dog? I mean, really… it’s adorable.IMG_20150717_222302

She got the same treatment as Naps, but with a few added gold paint details and Swarovski jewels.DSC03485

She makes a lovely little Victorian lady.

I did want the characters to really pop on the backgrounds, so I cut them out and overlayed them with a small folded piece of paper glued under the head for depth. I like the shadow it creates. I’m not great at drawing shadow, so I feel like this is kind of a cheat.

So there you go, another year of LR bday card nonsense out of the way… but what about next year?
